How were humans able to reach the majority of the continents before civilization was formed?

They just kept wandering. People back then were hunter gatherers, survival was just part of everyday life. They didn't need domesticated animals or heavy supplies to survive. People were opportunists, eating whatever they happen to find along the way. Disease wasn't really much of a problem until colonization began a few hundred years ago.
