A friend of mines has two girlfriends-one side gf and one RL gf. He needs to pick one.?

Okay. My buddy has one GF, but since she is only around half of the time, he met another girl who said she would be like his side-gf or in a sense, like an online-girlfriend who was going to help him strengthen his relationship with his RL girlfriend, and nothing more. Unfortunately, the more time she hung out with him, she began to want to become more than a side-girlfriend, and he's been trying to keep it strictly nothing more. Now he has a problem. He wants the side-gf to keep it the way it was suppose to be originally or just as friends, but he does not want to break her heart in the process, so what should he do? His relationship with his RL girlfriend has gotten better, but he is stuck at a standpoint.
