Why is my Chevy 350 leaking oil?

only time i've had oil pour from that area on my car is when the valve cover gaskets were in need of being replaced. it not only leaked.. but it was all over my spark plugs and ignition coils. it slowed my shifting and messed with the rpms.. i would check the placement of those and see if that could be it.
